How SurfEars Work During Diving
Surface protection – The hydrophobic mesh blocks water at the surface while allowing sound and pressure to pass.
Water trap design – At depth, a small amount of water may pass through the mesh and enter the internal channel. As pressure increases, a limited amount may also enter the outer ear canal, compressing the trapped air and helping the pressure outside the eardrum move toward ambient pressure. A compressed air pocket may remain closest to the eardrum.
Self-draining system – During ascent, the trapped air expands and can help push water back out through the mesh. This may explain why many users report little or no retained water after a dive.
Natural equalization – The large distributed mesh area allows pressure to be transferred through the system. At depth, controlled water entry and compression of the trapped air are believed to help the pressure in the external ear canal follow ambient pressure. Divers must still use their normal active middle-ear equalization technique.

Our founder, Christian Dittrich, a cold water surfer and former competitive swimmer, experienced this firsthand.
At age 30, he developed a severe case of surfer’s ear after years in cold conditions. During a surf trip to Morocco, recurring ear infections made it clear that existing ear protection did not work well enough.
Together with a team of engineers, he set out to develop a better solution. One that would keep water out without isolating the user from their surroundings.

Surfer’s Ear: Divers Beware!
Surfer’s ear is a condition where extra bone growth, known as exostosis, forms in the ear canal due to exposure to cold water and wind. Symptoms include water stuck in the ear, recurring ear infections and eventually loss of hearing.
Recent studies show that as many as 75.7% of surfers have some degree of surfer’s ear. But it’s not only surfers who get these issues, anyone exposing their ears to cold water and wind runs the risk, including divers.
