The New SurfEars 4.0: Diving Ear Plugs for Effortless Equalization
Diving is more than depth and equipment. It’s about being in tune with the ocean. To stay connected and protect your ears, a good pair of vented diving earplugs is essential.
SurfEars protect your ears while still allowing sound and pressure to move naturally.
This helps reduce discomfort from cold water and pressure changes without compromising awareness or hearing.
At the core of SurfEars is our patented vented membrane system, designed to allow natural pressure equalization while protecting the ear canal.
This makes SurfEars ideal for divers who want reliable ear protection without affecting their ability to equalize.
How SurfEars Work During Diving
Surface protection – The hydrophobic mesh blocks water at the surface while allowing sound and pressure to pass.
Water trap design – At depth, a small amount of water may pass through the mesh and enter the earplug’s internal channel.
Surface tension keeps it contained inside the plug, forming a water trap that prevents water from reaching the ear.
Self-draining system – As you ascend, expanding air in the ear pushes the trapped water back out through the mesh, automatically draining the plug.
Natural equalization – Pressure moves naturally through the system, allowing comfortable equalization even at depth.
SurfEars 4.0 builds on our patented vented membrane system with improved durability and a new wingless option for comfort under diving hoods.
Made partly from recycled ocean plastics and repurposed silicone, it delivers reliable performance in demanding diving conditions.
SurfEars was created in response to a very real and common problem.
Prolonged exposure to cold water and wind can lead to ear damage, infections, and hearing issues over time for people who spend a lot of time in the water.
Our founder, Christian Dittrich, a cold water surfer and former competitive swimmer, experienced this firsthand.
At age 30, he developed a severe case of surfer’s ear after years in cold conditions. During a surf trip to Morocco, recurring ear infections made it clear that existing ear protection did not work well enough.
Together with a team of engineers, he set out to develop a better solution. One that would keep water out without isolating the user from their surroundings.
For divers, exposure to cold or polluted water presents similar risks. Wearing diving earplugs is not only about comfort. It is about reducing the risk of infections, protecting your ears over time, and staying safe in the water.
With SurfEars, you keep water out while remaining aware of your surroundings. This supports a safe, immersive dive without compromising your ability to hear.
“Personally, as someone suffering from Surfer´s Ear, they have made a night and day difference in my diving experience. They protect my ears in both icy and tropical waters, fit comfortably under a swim cap or wetsuit, and help prevent infections, irritation, and hood squeeze. Equalising works perfectly, even at depth.”
– Vitomir Maričić, professional diver

Surfer’s Ear: Divers Beware!
Surfer’s ear is a condition where extra bone growth, known as exostosis, forms in the ear canal due to exposure to cold water and wind. Symptoms include water stuck in the ear, recurring ear infections and eventually loss of hearing.
Recent studies show that as many as 75.7% of surfers have some degree of surfer’s ear. But it’s not only surfers who get these issues, anyone exposing their ears to cold water and wind runs the risk, including divers.
The good news is that wearing ear plugs, such as SurfEars, can help prevent it. SurfEars offer a unique design that allows sound to come through but not water, keeping your ear canals warm and dry while ensuring maximum comfort and security.
