A conventional vented diving plug usually relies on a single small ventilation hole. SurfEars use a large-area hydrophobic acoustic mesh, giving a substantially larger and more distributed pressure-transfer area. Obstruction of the ventilation is therefore much less likely to disable it than a plug relying on one small vent.
